Bookchase

Bookchase® - has arrived…

After another eventful day yesterday - BA handling problems far away - we were disappointed to hear of yet another delay. However, our friends at AllPort managing the delivery did us proud and, as a result, the first 36 copies arrived at the Art Meets Matter studios in Marlborough, Wiltshire UK 5 minutes ago. The other thousands have headed off to be despatched to our retail customers…

We’re going to be using these for our first proper world launch at Preshute Primary School. All the children are dressed as characters from books and this afternoon the whole school - over 200 children from tiny tots in reception to seriously neo-adolescent Yr 6s - will be racing round the board in the world’s first Bookchase school tournament.

We’ll post the photos, video and anything else we can think of as soon as we have it. We hope the local newspaper might turn up and maybe even BBC Points West - we live in hope…

Bookchase® - and the Christmas rush…

We’re trying to guarantee that every order for Bookchase that we receive by 17 December will be delivered before Christmas. This is no small feat as we’ve already started to receive orders online from New York, Dublin and Amsterdam…how did they find out about it?

So, as long as you get your order in to us by then we’ll do our best. Can’t say fairer than that…

Bookchase® - the arrival…

This is turning into a bit of a saga and maybe a future question for Bookchase®. Will Bookchase arrive? Finally, after small fiascos involving Lufthansa (on strike), Cathay Pacific (food poisoning) our air-freighted consignment of the first copies of Bookchase® in the world arrive in a sleepy little airport called Heathrow around 2am tomorrow morning (22 Thursday November).

We think the delays are caused by a conspiracy involving major Toy and Game makers - they’ve already heard about Bookchase®, know it’s good and they want to stop you getting your copy. Ok, this may be slightly exaggerated but the good news is, as of Friday this week, we will be shipping as many copies of Bookchase® as we can to the considerable advance orders. Not least to Waterstones who kindly ordered for over 170 of their stores. Here’s to seeing it in Piccadilly, Brussels, Leicester & Peterborough…(obviously, there are more but a list in a blog might be a bit dull).

We’ll be putting up a list of the stores on the website this week so you can find your nearest store…

Bookchase® on TV?

Well, nearly.

We’re planning to create our own small TV channel to show some fab animations that Joe Davis has done. We’ll also be putting up video of anyone playing the game (including our recent BBC Interview with Olly Dearden - so watch this space - or rather, in hyperspace bookmark - www.bookchase.tv - coming to a web browser near you…

Bookchase® - not just a board game, a new way to read without turning pages…

Bookchase® on BBC Radio Wiltshire

Yes. It’s true. Today (21 November 2007) we were invited onto the BBC’s quirky and satirical Olly Dearden Show this morning. Noah (co-creator and chief tester), me (Tony Davis) and James Smith - Head of Noah’s School in Preshute, Marlborough. What fun!

They trailed the programme by interviewing people in the street about playing board games. The interview itself seemed to go very well but I was quite nervous as Olly was described on the BBC’s website as potentially satirical and unusual. Still Joe Davis was on hand to film the whole experience for evidence just in case things got out of hand. So watch this space for a possible video/audio experience if you missed the broadcast.

See Olly looking quite excited about meeting Tony and seeing Bookchase® for the first time - Click here for Olly Dearden’s Show. Seriously though, a big thank you to Alex Emery, Will Walder and Olly for making us so welcome. I feel a challenge match of Bookchase® with BBC Journalists coming on…

Bookchase - in the Bookseller…

We’ve just received a mention in Oct 27th of the UK Bookseller magazine. The article discusses the bookselling world’s build up to Christmas and Bookchase is there in black and white! I still have a child-like excitement about press mentions for any design project I’ve created and Bookchase is no exception.

Check out The Bookseller online here.

Bookchase® - the first online order…!

Well Bookchase - the website - has been live for a few hours now and although we haven’t told anyone about it yet we’ve already received our first web order. How exciting!

Bookchase - Is it educational?

A lot of people have asked, without having seen the game, whether Bookchase is educational. By definition, I think that playing bookchase is going to encourage and develop a love of books and all things bookish - however old you are. Whether you like pulp fiction or the classics every aspect of Bookchase is designed to tempt adults and children to read, re-read and re-discover forgotten treasures.

It is also true that at the Hay Festival we had a number of parents and teachers who were excited that their child/children/pupils we sitting down for an hour to play a game designed around the subject of books. There were lots of comments clearly indicating that ‘normally’ they didn’t read, weren’t interested etc. This was one of the most exciting discoveries at Hay - for them and us. That books really are accessible and for everyone…

Also, one of the reasons for putting a Library Card into the game was as a reminder that Libraries can be exciting places of discovery. I remember the excitement of my first Library card and not having to pay to borrow pretty much anything - a fantastic opportunity to enjoy reading.

However, at the end of the day, it Bookchase is just a board game. It is primarily designed for everyone to have fun. But who said fun can’t be educational?

Check out the Hay Festival.

Bookchase - how much time have you got?

I’ve been asked how long it takes to play Bookchase and the answer is - How long have you got? When designing the game I felt it was important that it could adapt to people in a hurry. We all know how long Monopoly® can take. The wikipedia entry for it says game length is 3 hours! Hands up all those parents who have said ‘No’ to a game of Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit or any other game with the kids because you can’t squeeze it in before bed/supper/bath/school times?

Well, Bookchase is meant to be the same as the name - a chase with books. Not to say you can’t play for 2 hours but it really is fun if you play a speedy version.

Here’s a hint - if playing with very young children or it’s nearly tea-time why not scatter some of the Bookchase books across the spaces on the board. Only children under the age of (you decide) are allowed to pick them up. All they need to do is roll the dice. Another speed enhancer is to give everyone some free books for their Bookchase shelf to start. Have fun!*

* Legal disclaimer - we are not liable for any game overruns which jeopardise supper or teeth-brushing or getting to school. How much fun can you squeeze into a day…!

Bookchase® goes live…

Well, it’s official - the website has finally gone live. Chris@blubolt has done a great job so far. A couple more tweaks and we’re ready for orders.
