So many enquiries about localising Bookchase® and acquiring rights for different territories. Raises all sorts of questions about the nature of the global village. Everyone loves the idea of being able to create your own question sets and customise based on what book you’re reading this week. And what is Bookchase in different languages? Had a funny conversation in the lift at Frankfurt Book Fair with some French men who debated whether it should be chasse au livre or chasse de livre - They liked the look of the game too. Onwards and inwards…

I’m already being asked where people can buy Bookchase®. Well, obviously from us. Definitely from Waterstones in the next few weeks and from quite few other people once they get to hear about it I’m sure.
You can also email info@bookchase.info

Had a warm, friendly chat with an ex-barrister called Jerina from Croatia who has given up law because she feels it is corrupting and too slow to change to the needs of modern society. She loved Bookchase® and was very keen to explore a version in Serbo-Croat? Can’t quite get my head around this one. Lots of questions about this: What is Bookchase® in Serbo-Croat? How big is Serbia?…

Well, it’s 0127 in the morning and I’m looking out over Frankfurt at the sleeping masses attending this year’s book fair.
I’ve never been here before so to be sharing a hall (8 Stand E949 - if you’re here and want to visit) with classic names from the world of publishing like Penguin is, he types in child-like excitement, great.
I’ve brought the first sample of Bookchase® to launch and everyone that stops long enough to look loves it. I’ve had conversations about localising/translating for Mexico, Iran (?!), Greece, Croatia and India so far. That’s definitely enough for one day.

At the Hay Literature Festival this year I introduced myself to pretty much anyone who would stop long enough to listen. I gave a pencil to Ian Rankin - who seemed surprised to be recognised. He said he’d use it to ‘do his Sudoko’. He asked me why I was in Hay and I explained that I’d designed the Penguin deckchairs scattered in the muddy areas! I also mentioned that his work featured in Bookchase. He seemed genuinely interested in the game and said ‘it sounds ideal for Christmas - I’ll look out for it’. Can’t say fairer than that…

Picking up my luggage from the carousel at Frankfurt airport I was pleasantly pleased to hear that after only one viewing of the first Bookchase® prototype Waterstones has decided to range/scaleout Bookchase® to around 170 of their stores. This is great news and not bad for a standing start given we didn’t intend to sell to ‘the trade’ until 2008. Looking forward to seeing in the shops…
